Morag Sutherland, Psy.D.
Dr. Morag Sutherland
Dr. Mary-Morag Sutherland is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. She enjoys working with individuals across the entire adult age range who are experiencing anxiety and depression as well as those affected by trauma and those with religious/existential concerns.
Her approach to therapy is integrative, providing less or more structure, depending upon what is most comfortable or helpful for you. She respects you as an active self-healer and full collaborator in the therapy process. She works primarily from a humanistic/existential perspective, and is also skilled in brief psychodynamic approaches. She may employ cognitive-behavioral approaches, particularly mindfulness-based interventions, when they may be the most helpful approach for specific issues.
One of her specialties is working with older adults. As we age, especially, we face losses that can seem to shrink or narrow our paths forward. She believes, though, that exciting challenges and possibilities continue to draw us onward-if we can hold fast to the notion that we humans, working together, are forever capable of growth and change.
Another of her specialties is LGBTQI-affirmative psychotherapy. Dr. Sutherland provides a truly safe space for working through relationship and other life issues whether or not they are related to your sexual orientation or gender identity.
She would enjoy helping you find a way beyond whatever is holding you back from freely navigating your life path. Together you might explore what lies behind your difficulties, improve your relationships, integrate various aspects of your life, or develop skills for managing stress, anxiety, and/or depression.
Dr. Sutherland holds doctoral and master's degrees in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. She also earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. She has prior experience in private practice, an inpatient psychiatric hospital, social service/healthcare organizations (including Center on Halsted and Howard Brown Health Center) and a progressive correctional setting.
